Nissens Huts at skipton-on-Swale

Cold in winter, hot in summer, the metal Nissen Hut's main advantge was the ability to pack the materials compactly for shipping and assemble the unit in hours, not days.

The images at left were all photographed by Howard Cowperthwaite in January, 2001.

He was a tail-gunner flying in Lancasters for 433 Squadron at Skipton-on-Swale during the war.

Click here for a page of photos on the Nissen Hut, which hopefully serves to illustrate the central role this building played in the airmen's lives.
