The Empress of Japan was built in 1930 for the trans-Pacific services out of Vancouver of the Canadian Pacific Line.

She was renamed Empress of Scotland in October 1942 following the entry of Japan into WW2.

After the war she was transferred to the Atlantic service from Liverpool, replacing the Empress of Britain which had been lost.

The promenade deck was plated in for Atlantic service.
