Pilot Officer Harold Sigal

Pilot Officer Harold Sigal attended #3 Bombing and Gunnery School Class 72 Dec 15, 1943 - Mar 9, 1944, with many of the men on this site. He crewed up with the Roy crew, Squadron 419

Pilot Officer Sigal and his crew, the A. Roy crew were shot down over Germany October 15th, 1944. Their Lancaster MKB800 plane was hit by flak and exploded. The report below from www.rcaf.com is the Daily operations report from the day.

October 14, 1944

40 Lancasters from 419 and 428 squadron, were joined by 218 Halifaxes from 408, 415, 420, 424, 425, 426, 427, 429, 431, 432, 433, and 434 squadrons. They were ordered on a daylight attack of Duisberg. The crews were over the target at between 17,000 and 21,000 feet, releasing 2,080,000 lbs of high explosives and 300,000 lbs of incendiaries.

Lost Bomber Report

"Serial Range KB700 - KB999 This aircraft was one of 300 Lancaster Mk.Xs ordered from Victory Aircraft of Canada and delivered from Sep43 to Mar45. Up to KB774 were initially fitted with Packard Merlin 38 engines and all subsequent models with Merlin 224 engines. KB800 was delivered to 419 Sqdn Sep44. KB800 was lost on its first operation with a total of 28 hours. Airborne 0615 14Oct44 from Middleton St.George. Hit by Flak near the AP and both starboard engines took fire. The Lancaster immediately went into a spin and exploded, throwing clear F/O Roy and scattering debris NW of the target area. Those killed are buried in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery.
